How Steam levels work

Your Steam level goes up as you earn XP, and every 10 levels each level costs 100 XP more. Levels 1 to 10 cost 100 XP each, levels 11 to 20 cost 200 XP each, levels 21 to 30 cost 300 XP each, and so on. That is why the first 10 levels take 1,000 XP but going from 90 to 100 takes 10,000.

Where Steam XP comes from

  • Game badges (100 XP per level): collect one full set of a game’s trading cards and craft a badge level. Each game badge has 5 normal levels and one foil level, so one game is worth up to 600 XP.
  • Event and sale badges: seasonal Steam sale badges give XP for each level you craft or buy with points.
  • Years of Service: 50 XP for every year your account has existed.
  • Community and Steam badges: completing community tasks, owning many games (the Game Collector badge) and others.

How much does it cost to level up?

The quickest way to level up is buying complete card sets on the Steam Community Market and crafting badges. The cheapest sets cost about $0.40 to $1.00 each, so 100 XP costs roughly that much. Because each level costs more XP than the last, the price grows fast: level 50 from zero is about 150 sets, level 100 about 550 sets and level 200 about 2,100 sets. Crafting a badge also gives you a profile background, an emoticon and a coupon, which you can sell on the market to win back part of the cost.

What higher levels give you

  • More friends: the friend limit is 250 plus 5 per level.
  • Profile showcases: one extra showcase slot every 10 levels.
  • Booster packs: every 10 levels raises your chance of getting a booster pack of trading cards by 20%.

Your Steam level also adds to the account score in the Steam account value calculator.
